Update

It's been an interesting year thus far... with a good chunk of it preparing and being evaluated at the Mayo Clinic's in Jacksonville, FL for a month followed by finishing up a few commissioned portraits!  My intent is to try to be a little better at keeping up with a few post now and then of happenings and paintings...

Portraits Unveiled II

Commissioned Portrait Unveiling

Commissioned portrait unveiled below in honor of Law Firm's Partner for 50 years of practice held in the Halcyon at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC. The portrait will hang in a conference room in his name at the firms office - It was an honor to be selected to do this painting! The photos of the painting are poor due to the low lighting at the event but the setting was just amazing!
They have a sense of humor because I was asked to do a second painting in his likeness which was unveiled first...

New Work

24x16 Oil on Linen

Painted a portion of a William Bouguereau painting and included another figure of the grown son to the picture. Poor photo quality from my 2.0 megapixel camera (yup a real antique)...

Portrait pose study

Oil on Paper

This was a quick painting sketch from a photo I saw on Facebook - She's a very talented artist and was at a major art function. I was so taken by her natural pose in conversation that I had to paint a reference sketch so that I can pose a model for a future painting - This painting I spent about 4 hours with it... Enough time to provide me with a good reference!

Jeremy Lipking Workshop II

I made it back home after after attending a fantastic workshop with Jeremy Lipking at his new studio in Agoura Hills, CA.  It was such a great experience to watch him paint and to learn  a little bit about his thought process and techniques!  I had so much fun meeting the other artist in attendance as well and the group formed a nice bond by the end of the 3rd day - The time went by so fast it would have been nice to last a few more days...  Jeremy was so helpful and patient with everyone making some excellent critiques to our paintings - I think we all walk away knowing that our paintings will improve in some way.  Emphasis was on positioning the model and lighting with how important the composition is to make a good painting, Drawing accuracy with sight measuring techniques, with the importance of taking your time and getting it right.  Both of the first two steps may take hours but it's this critical foundation that is most important.  Mixing proper skin tones and placement of color and paying particular close attention to values and so much more was presented...  I was not focused on the quality of my painting but rather watching and listening to Jeremy working his demonstration.  My painting was purely experimenting with the techniques described.  The first 3 photos above are of Jeremy and other artists, some of his work hanging on the wall, and of his demonstration.  The last 2 photos is the model standing next to my unfinished painting of her, and the last photo was my last day painting of another model.  I'm so charged up after this experience I can wait to get painting in my studio - Today!  I have a lot more photos which I'll throw some more in during my next post.

Jeremy Lipking Workshop

I wish this was my work!  I did not have anything ready to post so this had to do ;>).   Actually I've been busy getting everything in order and packed since I'll be leaving for Los Angeles on Thursday morning.  I'm going to be attending a 3 day painting workshop with a painter out there who I heard was not too bad I guess... Some artist by the name of Jeremy Lipking?  Ok, I can't hold it in - He's AMAZING!!!  I don't have enough space or time to mention all of his accomplishments - I CAN'T WAIT!  Click on his name above and check out his site...  Also, maybe I'll get to see Craig who's been featured in this blog somewhere below.  That is if he can make time in his busy California lifestyle!  On my return, I should have some good show in tell stuff to post for next week.

Jazz Man Oil Painting

36"x18" Oil on Canvas
SOLD

The day after our storm we have most of the snow gone and I'm very much looking forward to this weekend in the 70's! (what an extreme). Above is the Jazz Man near done. I hung this painting in a spot in my studio in which I could see him from every angle. I often found myself walking up to it and making small little changes to it and in doing so, we've become well connected... I think we are past this stage now I hope. I can't wait to varnish it to really bring out the colors where the light hits the sax and jacket.
